IPdraft

Prepare your own UK patent draft. Keep more of your budget.

For UK founders, inventors and company directors: turn technical notes into a structured draft and candidate claims you can review before self-filing.

Add your material: describe the invention and attach notes, slides, PDFs, documents or images. Choose UK, US and EP formats.

IPdraft prepares a draft: AI services screen the submission and, where it qualifies, produce draft text and candidate claims. A screening note may be returned instead.

You review every line: check technical accuracy, claims and ownership. A qualified patent professional should review complex or high-value inventions.

You or your representative files: IPdraft does not file for you. Drawings, forms, fees and filing are your responsibility.

Drafting credits fund drafting requests, not patent-office filings. Review current plan details before authorising a draft. Partner assessments and manually approved partner orders use their separate approval paths.

A granted patent can cut your corporation tax

Patent Box can give qualifying company profits an effective 10% Corporation Tax rate. At the 25% main rate, £100,000 of qualifying profits would mean an illustrative £15,000 reduction compared with tax at 25%. This is a possible later benefit of a granted patent—not a saving delivered by buying an IPdraft draft.

Eligibility requires a granted qualifying patent, ownership or a qualifying exclusive licence, qualifying development, an election and qualifying profits. Group companies must meet active-ownership conditions. The R&D fraction and your applicable tax rate affect the calculation; not all company profits qualify.

Illustrative only. Grant can take years and is not guaranteed. Speak to your accountant. Not tax advice.

How it works

  1. Describe your invention and supply material you are authorised to disclose.
  2. Receive draft text and candidate claims, or a screening note.
  3. Review technical accuracy, ownership and claim support.
  4. You or your representative prepares forms and drawings, submits to the UK IPO and pays official fees.

Important information

Questions before you start

How much does it cost?

The approved fixed price is £895 per application, with no VAT charged. UK IPO fees and any professional review are separate. Purchasing has not launched; test checkout still requires a payment-provider connection and verification. Existing account allowances remain unchanged.

How much could I save compared with an attorney?

Published examples include Hindles' £5,000–£10,000+ initial application range and Sprintlaw's £3,000–£6,000 simple / £6,000–£10,000+ complex drafting ranges. They cover different services, so compare an actual quote with £895 plus official fees and any review you need. No particular saving or equivalent legal protection is guaranteed.

Who can use IPdraft?

Founders, inventors and teams can prepare a draft from material they own or are authorised to disclose. Accountants and advisers can explore client introductions through the separately approved partner channel. Naming co-inventors does not determine ownership; employment, university and collaboration agreements can affect rights.

How long does a draft take?

We do not advertise a turnaround time until real submissions have been measured. Your workspace shows processing status. Screening may return a note rather than proceed to drafting; some submissions require further information or review.

What is Patent Box, and does it apply to me?

Relief is calculated through a tax deduction. Smaller-company rates and marginal relief need an individual calculation; ask your accountant.

What do I file, and where?

For the UK route, review your specification and claims, prepare the required drawings and forms, then submit through the UK IPO and pay its fees yourself or appoint a representative. Basic online filing, search and examination fees total £405 at the relevant stages from 1 April 2026; extras and renewal fees may apply. IPdraft also supports US and EP drafting formats; each route has its own requirements.

How is my idea kept private?

Signed-in account and file-access checks protect workspace access. Processing uses external AI services and stored documents; it is not wholly local and immediate deletion is not promised. Review the service's publication status and terms before uploading sensitive information, and never upload third-party confidential material without authority.

Is a draft the same as a filed application?

No. AI-generated text and candidate claims are preparation material. You must check accuracy, support, ownership and filing requirements. IPdraft does not submit applications, prepare official forms or drawings, pay fees, give a patentability or novelty opinion, assess freedom to operate, or guarantee a grant. A tracker entry is not proof that a patent office received an application.

What if I need an attorney?

A weak draft can narrow protection or leave important features unprotected. Seek qualified professional review for complex or high-value inventions. Professional services are not included in the software price and no available attorney network is promised. The partner channel remains subject to availability, eligibility, approved terms and client consent.

Do you give legal or tax advice?

No. IPdraft is software, not a law firm. Patent Box and R&D references are general information, not advice or an eligibility decision. Records of invention work can support an R&D relief claim, but qualifying work and relief vary by company; an accountant must assess them.

What if I have already disclosed the invention?

A publication, sale, pitch or other disclosure may affect patent rights. Grace periods and exceptions differ by jurisdiction. Do not assume you can still patent the idea; obtain advice before further disclosure.

How do existing credits and plans work?

Existing Free accounts start with two credits without automatic monthly refill. A credit covers one invention run in the selected formats, is reserved at processing, committed on completion and returned after screening or terminal failure. Existing paid renewal and cancellation rules remain unchanged. There is no Pro or Business trial. A separate Enterprise workspace is not included in the software allowance.
